Progress Update: SHE Wellness Centre at the Former Theatre Royal Site

Exciting progress is underway on the SHE Wellness Centre — our purpose-built hub for holistic cancer support — at the historic former Theatre Royal site on Campbell Street in Hobart.

May 2025:

SHE received the first tranche of government funding under the formal funding deed — a major milestone in bringing our vision to life. This initial support marks a significant step toward making the Centre a reality for Tasmanians affected by cancer.

June 2025:

We proudly submitted a Development Application (DA) to Hobart City Council. Lodging the DA is a crucial first step in the planning process and lays the groundwork for the next stages of construction and design. Once the DA is formally advertised, we will launch a competitive tender process and continue our engagement with local builders.

September 2025:

This month marked a major milestone for the Wellness Centre project, with Hobart City Council granting Development Application (DA) approval. This decision confirms strong community support and allows us to move into the next phase—finalising the detailed design by January and appointing a builder early in 2026. With DA approval secured, we are one step closer to creating Tasmania’s first dedicated Cancer Wellness Centre, a place of care, comfort, and connection for patients and their families.

Lease Agreement:

A long-term lease with the University of Tasmania — who own the site — is now in its final stages. This partnership helps secure the future of the Centre at this important location in the hospital precinct, just across from the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Project Leadership:

We’re thrilled to announce the appointment of Project Manager Mike Hunnibell, who brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of Tasmania’s health and infrastructure needs. Mike is working closely with the SHE team and local design consultants Cumulus Studio to finalise the Centre’s design and prepare detailed documentation for the build phase.

With momentum building, we are one step closer to realising a vision that began with Jo Harris’s dream of a dedicated space for holistic, person-centred cancer care in Tasmania. Thank you to all our supporters, partners, and community — we can’t wait to share more updates soon.
